Biggest Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing a Major
There are quite a few mistakes that you can make when going into college. On average college students change their major 4 times within the first year. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to start majoring in something because it seems easy. Usually when you follow this logic you’re dead wrong. Also choosing a certain major because you think it will make you a lot of money is a bad idea, because most people who do that just end up quitting and choosing something else. There’s nothing wrong with exploring your options, but at the same time you have to realize how to make good decisions.
A lot of freshmen make the mistake of thinking that the major they choose in college will determine what type of work they do for the rest of their lives. Many people end up with jobs that don’t even relate to what there major was in college 10 years or so after graduation. It’s not necessarily what you will be doing years from now, so don’t make the mistake of thinking that going in.
New college students also tend to think that by getting general education requirements out of the way first it will be easier later on. Not all general education credits will apply to your major, so you have to be extra careful when choosing what it will be. Only take classes that are required and relate to what you are majoring in, so you won’t waste your time with any unnecessary classes.
The last thing you want is to spend time and money on something that doesn’t even matter in the end, so educate yourself before picking certain classes. Also make sure that you know which classes you need to take for your major. If the one you are interested in requires a lot of math and you aren’t very good at it, then you might want to pick something else.
