10 TV Shows Every College Guy Should be Watching

by Jordan on March 3, 2010

We do our best to educate you on how-to concepts and entertainment to keep you as the most entertaining guy in the classroom, at the party, and at the local bar.  Here are 10 shows you should definitely be watching.  Just be careful who you vote for when the Emmy’s come around.  We heard about this one guy who got it pretty bad for voting wrong…

How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother is a comedy about Ted (Josh Radnor) and how he fell in love. It all starts when Ted’s best friend, Marshall (Jason Segel), drops the bombshell that he’s going to propose to his long-time girlfriend, Lily (Alyson Hannigan), a kindergarten teacher. At that moment, Ted realizes that he had better get a move on if he too hopes to find true love. Helping him in his quest is Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), a friend with endless, sometimes outrageous opinions, a penchant for suits and a foolproof way to meet women. When Ted meets Robin (Cobie Smulders), he’s sure it’s love at first sight, but destiny may have something else in store. The series is narrated through flashbacks from the future.

Entourage

Vince Chase is a sexy young actor whose career is on the rise. To share the fun of his ride to the top of Hollywood and keep him grounded, Vince looks to Eric, Drama and Turtle, his childhood buddies from Queens. Together, they’ll navigate the highs and lows of Hollywood’s fast lane, where the stakes are higher, and the money and temptations greater, than ever before. But that certainly will not stop them from having fun the whole way through.

Adrian Grenier (“The Devil Wears Prada”, “Drive Me Crazy”) stars as Vince, an actor on the verge of stardom. Kevin Connolly (“Antwone Fisher,” “John Q”) plays Eric, Vince’s closest confidant who’s learning the rules of the business as he tries to help Vince make the right choices and keep his goals aimed high. Kevin Dillon (“The Doors,” “Platoon”) plays Vince’s half-brother Johnny Drama, whose own acting aspirations have been eclipsed by Vince’s success, but that doesn’t stop Johnny from constantly looking for work and going to auditions. Jerry Ferrara (“Grounded for Life,” “Leap of Faith”) plays Turtle, the least experienced of the group who is always up for a good time. Jeremy Piven (“Old School,” “The Larry Sanders Show”) plays Ari, Vince’s aggressive, high-powered agent, who clashes with Eric over his client’s decisions.

House

House (aka House MD), from executive producers Paul Attanasio, Katie Jacobs, David Shore, and Bryan Singer is a new take on mystery, where the villain is a medical malady and the hero is an irreverent, controversial doctor who trusts no one, least of all his patients.

Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is devoid of bedside manner and wouldn’t even talk to his patients if he could get away with it. Dealing with his own constant physical pain, he uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. While his behavior can border on antisocial, House is a maverick physician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts have afforded him a great deal of respect. An infectious disease specialist, he’s a brilliant diagnostician who loves the challenges of the medical puzzles he must solve in order to save lives.

The Office

Based on the popular British series of the same name, this faster-paced American version follows the daily interactions of a group of idiosyncratic office employees at paper company Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch via a documentary film crew’s cameras.

Regional manager Michael (Steve Carell) thinks he’s the coolest, funniest, best boss ever – which, of course, makes him the uncoolest, most obnoxious and annoying boss as far as his staff are concerned. Salesman Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) has always loved receptionist Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and loves sabotaging his cube-mate, the know-it-all Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson). Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak) started as a young, smart, self-possessed temp, but quickly figured out the real office politics despite Michael’s attempts to instill the official point-of-view, and gets himself a job at corporate HQ in New York.

The staff is rounded out by quiet Phyllis Lapin Vance (Phyllis Smith), beaten down by the working life Stanley Hudson (Leslie David Baker), office alcoholic Meredith Palmer (Kate Flannery), up-tight Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey), formerly closeted homosexual Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nunez), stocky and uncouth Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner), ambivalent kleptomaniac Creed Bratton (Creed Bratton), Sad Sack HR rep Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein), persistently love-struck Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling), icy corporate manager turned Michael’s girlfriend Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin), former Stamford branch denizen and Cornell graduate Andy Bernard (Ed Helms), warehouse foreman Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson), and Pam’s ex-fiancé Roy Anderson (David Denman).

MANswers

Got a stupid question? Chances are it will be answered on this Spike TV show. The host is a bit way over the top and the acting is terrible, but the concepts get interesting sometimes. Get your fill of gross humor in this male-directed variety show. MANswers is like a magazine show filled with outrageous and off-the-wall subjects. Although some topics border on barely legal, you will be entertained. If you’re looking for a fun way to fill your mind with nearly useless facts and trivia, you have found the right place.

24

24 is a thriller which is shown in “real-time”, with each minute of airtime corresponding to a minute in the lives of the characters, often depicts torture scenes, and often contains unexpected plot twists.[13] While the show only has 44 minutes of airtime, the real time clock of the show continues to tick during the commercials, emphasizing the reality of the 24 hours of the season in which the characters work. Finally, 24 has avoided flashbacks with one exception in Season 1 and it does not use slow motion techniques, even on moments of rapid action or sleight-of-hand, which other franchises might choose to emphasize in that way.  The main character is Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), who works with the United States government as it fights fictitious terrorist threats to the United States.

Sons of Anarchy

From Kurt Sutter, writer/producer of The Shield, comes Sons of Anarchy, a dark drama set in Charming, a sheltered community watched over by a renegade motorcycle club intent on protecting the town from the newcomers that threaten it. Jackson “Jax” Teller is one member of the brotherhood, who finds his own loyalty to the group tested when he experiences its increasing lawlessness and notoriety, while at the same time adjusting to life as a father. But confusing matters are Jax’s mother and stepfather, two ruthless individuals who happen to be the masterminds behind the club.

The League

FX’s “The League” TV show is a new ensemble comedy series from producers Jeff Schaffer (“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Seinfeld”) and his wife Jackie Marcus Schaffer (“Disturbia”) that is set against the backdrop of a fantasy football league.  FX’s “The League” TV show is about male friendship, marriage, parenting, suburbia, and growing up or refusing to grow up through a circle of friends involved in a fantasy football league. The ensemble cast of FX’s “The League” TV show includes Mark Duplass, Steve Rannazzisi, Nick Kroll, Paul Scheer, Jon Lajoie, and Katie Aselton.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Come join Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito), the self-centered owners of Paddy’s Pub in Philadelphia who will do just about anything, no matter how reprehensible, in an attempt to better their own situation. Coming off a season in which they performed a musical, pooped the bed, and nearly died, you would think the gang would have learned their lesson by now. Well, think again.  Buckle up as the gang goes on a road trip. Be sure to take notes when Dennis reveals his secret method for seduction. From wrestling for the returning troops to stimulating the economy to sneaking into the World Series, there’s no shortage of scheming this year for the staff at Paddy’s.

Two and a Half Men

Charlie is a well-to-do bachelor with a house at the beach, a Jaguar in the front, and an easy way with women. His casual Malibu lifestyle is interrupted when his tightly wound brother Alan, who’s facing a divorce, and his son Jake, come to live with him. Together, these two and a half men confront the challenges of growing up; finally. Complicating matters are the brothers’ self-obsessed, controlling mother, Evelyn, Alan’s estranged wife, Judith and Charlie’s crazy neighbor Rose, who wants to be a part of his life and is willing to do anything to be around.
