Contemporary Art: Why Men Quote Movies

by Michael B. Mohn on March 5, 2010

It’s something most college men do. We don’t know how or why it started happening, but it has long since become one of the most common yet hilarious forms of communication on college campuses. Some guys get it, some don’t, but all men can appreciate a well placed quote in the midst of random conversation. The fact is, there are little moments as gratifying when a properly placed movie quote ignites the laughter and approval of all surrounding men, which then turns into a “quotathon” of the movie you just referenced. Outsiders often wonder the same thing about movie quoting.

“Did you eat paint chips as a kid? Haha…”

Why?

It’s simple, but not really. To get to the basis of things, guys quote movies because above anything else, it serves as a great way of bonding. Each quote leads to a response, whether a returned quote or laughter, which then increases the appeal and approval of each person as individuals. I mean lets be serious, who doesn’t enjoy playing a round of golf with the guys and hearing “50 bucks says I can hit over the highway”, or when talking about the slut from last weekend, “Hell, Lumberg f*cked her”. Understanding and delivering the perfect response leads not only personal satisfaction, but the approval and welcoming of others. Which leads me to my next point.

“Because I want, to fit, in…”

Status Among Quoters

As a movie quoter, there is nothing more disappointing, utterly devastating, or gut wrenchingly  impure than a quote that isn’t recited properly or when someone asks “Wait, what movie is that from again?” The fact is, the better the quoter you are, the more respect you will attain from your peers who really appreciate a nice movie quote. But if you mess up? “Say G’day to Reggie Ray” because you’re just not quite there to the league of elite movie quoters. In essence it becomes a competition among men, or a measure of testosterone if I may. It becomes a challenge to everyone quoting to see who can remember the most quotes, and who can recite them properly and most creatively within the situational context. And if you can’t keep up? Well “You are exquisitely pathetic!” – Joe Dirt

Weird Science

How are quotes initially placed? Although not much research has be done, it seems that when your ears hear a word or a set of words in a sentence, they trigger the memory nodes in your brain to remembering a movie quote, thus resulting in the delivery of a quote. Therefore, any words or phrases said during normal conversation becomes fair game for the recital of a movie quote should the words trigger something in the quoters memory.
