While it may seem that having the ability to text message girls at your disposal should be considered a good thing — seeing as you don’t have to work as hard, and you don’t actually have to talk to the ladies, and you can kind of communicate with them whenever you want — there is certainly a set of rules you must abide by if you want to succeed at it. Like anything, you can easily mess up texting. This can include texting at the wrong time, or texting the wrong things, or, in some extreme cases, even texting back responses at all.

It’s a tough minefield to navigate. For example, here’s some of the simple rules you should be following to give yourself a chance at all when it comes to the texting:

- Use only one question mark per message.
- Your messages, unless scripted, should be shorter than hers.
- Use a “fire-and-forget” strategy—send the message, put the phone down, and go do something else.
- If she texts you back, take your time before responding. Don’t rush right over to the phone. Take at least as long to reply as she did.
- When you write a message, leave it as a draft for ten minutes; then go back and read it again—and make sure it’s not embarrassing!
- If she asks a question (like “How’s it going?”) to which you can give only a boring response—don’t answer it.

In college, sleep is the first thing to go. You want to stay out late and party, find some lovely ladies in the dorm down the street to hook up with, or cram for a test that you forgot all about and is in less than 12 hours. But then, come morning, you’re either taking said test or heading to a class that you have to show up to or else you’re going to get removed from the class. It is, to say the least, a stressful time and there doesn’t seem like enough hours of the day. Oh, sure, you can try to take a handful of naps throughout the day. But that’s not the deep sleep that you need in order to avoid problems to your health.

Get to sleep!

In fact, there’s a mindset that lurks on college campuses across the country where sleep is for the weak, and if you need that much you don’t have what it takes to succeed. Except, that’s not true. In fact, getting the right amount of sleep is necessary to be a success. As this article from AskMen.com points out, if you forget about sleep, then you can forget about doing well at class.

But there is also such a thing as too much sleep:

Sleep deprivation has profound effects on hormones that control metabolism, appetite, mood, concentration, memory retention, and cravings. It is associated with high blood pressure, elevated stress hormone levels, irregular heartbeat, and compromised immune function, and it drastically increases your risk for obesity and heart disease. Results from the 2004-2006 U.S. National Health Interview Survey indicated that adults who usually slept less than six hours were much more likely to smoke, drink more than five glasses of alcohol, not exercise, and be obese. Interestingly, adults who slept more than nine hours also engaged in these unhealthy behaviors. Researchers from the University College London found that lack of sleep, or too much of it, more than doubled your risk of death. Scientists are quite familiar with the links between poor sleep and cardiovascular disease, but they’re not sure why sleeping too much is also bad for you. A possible connection to depression and low socioeconomic status has been found, but this needs to be further elucidated.

Lists. Lists are magical for the Internet. They are places that people can come together in the comments section and have grounded and intelligent discussions about whether or not the list is accurate, and what would they would change in the list if they had the ability to do so. The list we’re going to highlight today, though, isn’t just some random list like “Top 45 Covers of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’.” It’s something much more vital and important. Namely, the hottest 99 women currently in existence in this, the year 2012.

Over at AskMen.com they crunched the numbers and put together a list of the top 99 around. While we certainly have our qualms with a few inclusions and how they are ranked in general, they made a whole lot of good points and have made choices that we can only respect. We’re not going to spoil their number one (which can, we can guess, ONLY lead to controversy). You’re going to have to actually head over to the link and click-thru the other 98 gals to get there. (And, really, there are worse ways to spend a morning.) But we are going to say that they certainly got it right with number two, the gorgeous Kate Upton:

While it may seem a bit too early to start thinking about right now, soon enough the specter of marriage is going to be an ever-present institution in your lives. Sure, maybe you’re not going to be the first to get married right out of college, but some of your friends are. Your next five years are going to be spent attending weddings of every stripe and kind, sometimes across the country, sometimes right down the block. EVERYONE is going to be using their 20s in order to get married and, soon enough, you’ll feel the pressure of being one of the only people you know without a wedding ring. And so you’ll start thinking that maybe it’s for you, and maybe it’s time to settle down and call it a life.

It’s taken us awhile, but we finally did it: A few weeks ago, we broke down and got our first ever smartphone. And man, what a difference the whole thing has made. We’re now … well, it would be kind of pointless to tell you all exactly what we’re doing with the smartphone seeing as just about EVERYONE, EVER has been using them for years now. But, suffice it to say, our mind is blown and we are in a gadget frame of mind. So when we stumbled onto this article over at Men’s Health about the various amazing gadgets on display at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, well, we just had to share it.

Here’s a problem I bet you didn’t know you had: You have a tablet, you have a smartphone—what’s on one is never really on the other, right? Asus’ novel solution is to make a tablet with a dock for the phone, so you just plug in and start tableting! It’s like a screen-embiggener! It eliminates the need for multiple downloading of apps, disparate content between them, and a host of other problems that come with our increasing reliance on multiple devices.

Ask us if we were interested in this a few weeks ago, and we would have ignored you, said it wasn’t really an issue for us, and then got back to typing out a text message on our crappy phone to someone who sent a photo message, alerting them to the fact that they’d have to email it instead. But now! I didn’t even know this was a problem you could have, having TOO MANY screens. And now I do, and I want that problem to be solved.

The problem is, once you find her, what do you do? You can Be Her Friend, sure. That’s the easy part. All it is is a simple click, and if she refuses you then it’s pretty easy to get the hint. But when she does accept you as a Friend and puts you in her large grouping of people, what’s the next step? Asking her for a date on Facebook could be taken one of two ways: (1) She was waiting for you to do so and will be super excited that you did; (2) She’ll be super-creeped out because your profile is terrible and full of proof of your sketchiness.

Clean up any incriminating photos (or at least hide them). I once had a friend of a friend try to ask me out on Facebook. He looked cute from his profile pic, but upon further examination, I realized he was a sex fiend. Or at least he presented himself as such on Facebook. Every other photo was a shirtless shot taken in front of the mirror or a photo of a half-naked female ass. He thought he was an art photographer; I thought he was a perv. Helmut Newton he was not. Keep the drunk pics, the one of you at the porn convention and any mirror self-portraits hidden. They definitely are not going to endear you to a woman.

The old saying goes that the first impression you make is always the most important one. And there’s no further indication of that then when you experience a really, truly terrible handshake. Think about it for a second. When’s the last time you remember meeting someone that had a terrible fish-laden handshake? Think about how receiving that opening introduction to them made you formulate their opinion about them? Did it make you more or less likely to, let’s say, give them a job?

Especially in this economy you don’t want to start off on the wrong, weak-handshake foot. Instead, you want to make sure the first hand-impression you make is the right one. Keeping your resolution

So, it’s been two days and you’re staying strong. Your New Years Resolution (to go to the gym more often, lose that weight, talk to more girls, get laid more often, get better with money, go to all of your classes, etc., etc., and what-not, forever and ever) is holding strong. You have yet to go back on it. But you will. Just like every other year, you’ll get by for a few weeks before ultimately back-sliding, feeling terribly about yourself, and that will be that.

But it doesn’t have to be that way this year. There’s plenty hanging around on the Internet about what to do to avoid this back-sliding of your New Years Resolution (it’s what the kids call “bait-link”), but the best one we uncovered, one actually worth reading, is over at Men’s Health today. Over there, they actually go through the science behind actually sticking to your New Years Resolution. For example:

Get in the Best Shape of Your Life with Insanity!

How many times have you started up your gym membership again only to go full throttle for a few weeks then fall back in to the same rut you were stuck in before?  It happens to all of us. Don't be a schmuck

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Hooray for Kwanzaa, and whatever other Winter Solstice-like holidays you’re celebrating this week. No doubt your week is going to be a hodge-podge of eating hearty meals with your family and/or getting together with friends at nice restaurants (or, not so nice place) and/or pulling some kind of end-of-year meals and parties with your co-workers and possibly your boss. In other words, this week you’re going to eating a whole hell of a lot. And it’s important that during these meals you don’t fuck it up by doing something terribly.

While a lot of these may seem like obvious faux pas, there are also a handful of offensive moves we didn’t even think were that offensive.
