How to Tap a Keg

Tapping a Keg

When you are planning a killer keg party, you will want to know how to properly tap it so you can get the beer flowing as quickly as possible. The first thing you will have to do is pick the keg up. After you do that, you’ll want to let it rest in one place for a while. When you were transporting it from the store in your vehicle, a lot foam built up which means that you will need to give it time to go down. Just put the keg wherever you plan on making it available to everyone and the party and wait a little while.

Once you have let it sit for an hour or so, you’ll want to completely remove the cap. Remember that tapping the keg with the seal still on will make it harder, so don’t try to impress your friends by trying to hold it in place the entire time. You will want to next get the tap ready and keep it aligned with the hole on the top of the keg. The next thing you will need to do is find the tiny slits on the top of the keg; these are meant to guide the tap so it will open the keg.

When you have the tap aligned with the hole and the slits, you will want to push down. Make sure that you are putting pressure on the ball in downward motion, so you will be able to have room for the beer to come out. You don’t need to be Superman to do this, just make sure you are pushing with a decent amount of strength. While you are pushing down you will want to make sure to slide the tap into place, turning it clockwise. Once turned all the way it should lock into place and you are done. Be sure to pour about six cups from the keg as soon as you finish. This will make sure to get out all the excess foam so everyone who comes to the party can get straight up beer.
