So, we saw Drive the other night. It was good. (Not great, which is no doubt going to get us in trouble from all of the people around the world who mistake something that is slow-moving to automatically be full of depth.) It was fine. Is it worth seeing? Sure. Is it the greatest movie of the year and worth a whatever-the-hell rating over at Rotten Tomatoes? Probably not. But one thing you have to admit about it is that it’s definitely a “man movie.”

Again, the “man movie” is a bit of a nebulous term; no one’s exactly sure what it means. But you know it when you see it. The guys over at AskMen.com took a look at the list of movies coming out this fall and pointed out the most manly movies of the bunch. The one we’re looking forward to the most:

No.9 Moneyball
There’s few things more American than Brad Pitt and baseball, both of which collide in this Bennett Miller adaptation of the landmark novel by the same name. Pitt plays real life former Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, who tried to reshape his cash-strapped club by defying baseball’s oldest conventions. If Pitt finally wins an Oscar for his portrayal (he’s an early favorite), he may finally be the man who has everything.

3-D is the worst

When we read the headline over at Men’s Health saying “Why 3-D Movies Suck,” we just knew we would be linking to it today. We’ve known that 3-D movies have sucked for awhile. They’re dimly lit. They take you out of the story that you’re watching. They are not, in any way, a more realistic portrayal of how we see things. But why it this? If we see in three dimensions shouldn’t images that are processed in three dimensions seem closer to reality for us?

Our long-held pet theory is that, when we sit down and don’t move, we’re not really looking at things in 3-D. For example, sit perfectly still and look at something. What you’re seeing is a 2-D image. It’s only when you start to move around that the things in the foreground shift a certain way, the background moves, and you’re looking at something in three dimensions. And when you’re sitting in a movie theater, you’re never moving around. You’re just sitting perfectly still.

In any case, that was just our theory. Actual scientists, meanwhile, have another theory:

He says true 3-D—the type that occurs in the real world when you look at, say, the telephone on your desk—occurs because our eyes are separated, and so they focus on the same single image (the telephone) from different angles. In movies, filmmakers mimic this effect by projecting two slightly different images onto the screen. The 3-D glasses you wear in the theater allow each of your eyes to see one of the images clearly, and your brain puts them together to form one three-dimensional image.

But unless both of your eyes see with exactly the same strength and clarity, Rosenberg explains, you’re susceptible to headaches or vision problems due to “brain strain” caused by the movie-style 3-D.

Seeing as, you know, they are real science people and we are just Internet bloggers, their argument may hold a little more substance. But still. In any case, the conclusion is, science says 3-D sucks. Deal with it.

Best College Characters

There are some college movie characters that just stick in our minds as being the funniest and most memorable, such as Frank “The Tank” from Old School played by Will Ferrell. Who can forget this classic movie about an old college graduate who tries to relive his wild youth by starting his own fraternity? Frank definitely represents what a lot of college students want: to drink, have fun, and party hard. There is always at least one Frank on campus that guzzles beer like it is water and parties well into the morning. If you haven’t seen Old School then you will need to get it as soon as possible.

Rodney Dangerfield’s character “Thornton Melon” from the movie Back to School is another classic character that a lot of college students can relate to; he is a major slacker, would always rather party and cheat his way through tests rather than study, and always makes trouble with his professors. He is the perfect character for college students to relate to when there are so many demanding professors and so little time.

Of course Van Wilder played by Ryan Reynolds is another classic character from a college movie that ends all college movies. He is a huge party monster that can score any girl he wants and always finds a way to pull of the most epic stunts. There isn’t a student on campus that doesn’t wish he could be a little bit more like Van.

This movie is truly one of the better college-themed movies available, and if you haven’t already seen it you should add it to your list of films that you absolutely need to watch. It’s definitely a prime example of outrageous college comedy at its best, and it has the funniest scenes and above all the best character to summarizes what it means to go to college.

Earlier today a professionally done short film was released on YouTube leading to immense speculation, excitement, and several Mortal Kombat fan-boys frothing at the mouth. The director of last years’ “Fame,” Kevin Tancharoen, took the helm of the short film entitled “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” with the help of kombat khoreographer Larnell Stovall and a solid supporting kast of kharacters [Ed: You're killin' me man!].

Apparently the brilliantly done short film/teaser is a test for a potential R-rated reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise (long dead since Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997). If this is indeed a test, my verdict can be summed up in two words “Flawless Victory” – and considering the fact that the video is spreading across the internet like wild-fire I’m going to assume I’m not the only one who enjoyed it. Either way, make sure you watch the video below and comment with your own thoughts and opinions.

Here is a short clip from Get Him to the Greek, which hot big this past weekend at the box office. Puff Daddy, Sean Combs, P. Diddy, or just Diddy, whatever the hell he calls himself gives Jonah Hill a brief on mind f*cking.  The purpose for the brief is that he is preparing Jonah Hill for his upcoming task of taking Russell Brand (Aldous Snow) to the Greek – Not Greece. Confusing? Yes. Funny? Yes.

Holy crap, this clip is epic awesomeness. Definitely worth a click and watching the whole thing. Essentially, the clip is has this reporter/journalist that bombards innocent bystanders in New York and scares the hell out of everybody by running up to them. He seriously tests their patience and questions everybody about movies that are out right now. Why are you still reading? I said epic awesomeness…watch, damn it!

Mic check 1, 2, 1, 2

It seems like movies today are the same thing rehashed over and over again.  Some of us here at The Campus Throne wish for the old days where a movie meant something more than just a bunch of explosions and hot girls (but we’d watch any movie with Megan Fox).  Where have those days gone where the good guy has a showdown with the bad guy.  Where guys robbed trains, drank whiskey and played poker.  Here are some of our favorite Westerns picked by The Campus Throne.

BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969)

Starring: Paul Newman, Robert Redford

Based on the real-life story of Butch, Sundance and the Hole in the Wall Gang, it humorously shares the adventures of two charming bandits who rob one train too many and are suddenly forced to flee to a new life in Bolivia.  At the end of the movie, you may just want to go out and rob a couple of trains. (Don’t blame us…)

HIGH NOON

Starring: Gary Cooper, Thomas Mitchell

This Western has the one scene that has been duplicated over and over again.  The confrontation between good and evil against a western backdrop is the sight of a twitchy-fingered villain staring down a white-hat hero in the middle of an abandoned street. This is the one that started it all with the “showdown” in the square.  A must see if you consider yourself a “badass.”

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

Starring: Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen

A town in Mexico is being terrorized by a group of bandits so the townsfolk turn to the “Magnificent Seven” lead by the bad ass of all badass Steve McQueen.  The Magnificent Seven consists of seven rough and tough bad asses who just want to kill and collect money for their services.  If your in the mood for some blood and a lot of testosterone, make sure you check this out.

TOMBSTONE

Starring: Val Kilmer, Kurt Russel

Ever hear of a place called the O.K, Corral?  This is the story of the Wyatt Earp and his brothers making a stand in Tombstone against the Clayton brothers.  After finishing this movie we were pretty sure we saw chest hair grow for the first time.  Massive amounts of blood shed in this one!

SHANE

Starring: Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur

This movie has been debated since it came out…what exactly happens at the end of the movie?  Many websites and fans have come up with different interpretations to the ending.  Watch it for yourself and tell us what you think about the ending. “Shane! Come back!”

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach

This Western is about a rollicking treasure hunt that pairs a loner gunman with a quirky Mexican bandit. Complicating their quest for buried gold is the Civil War equivalent of a hit man.  Eventually, it soon becomes every man for himself.

3:10 TO YUMA (2007)

Starring: Christian Bale, Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe is the bad guy who constantly kills and steals money until he is caught by the townsfolk.  Enter Christian Bale, the poor farmer who volunteers to take Russell Crowe to the train to Yuma.  Can you guess what time the trains at?  But overall, 3:10 to Yuma is one of the best Westerns in recent memory.

Come on, admit it, at one point in your life you have worried that our cozy little civilization would one day fall as the zombie hordes swept across the Earth. Its okay, it’s only natural to think that. In fact, there are many people out in the world who are already prepared for a zombie apocalypse, but there are many more that are not. Now, a zombie apocalypse may be regulated only to the movies, unless some rage-infected monkeys get out, but if there is a sudden increase in the undead, you will want to avoid these locations.

1. THE HOSPITAL

Okay, so the recently deceased are coming back to life and chewing on the living? Most people when they feel sick go to the hospital. So, with these two tidbits of information, what do you think will have the highest concentration of newly-recruited zombies? The hospital! This is the place you do not want to be when the zombie apocalypse begins because this is typically where it all starts. More and more people come into the hospital, and more and more zombies come out. If you are in a hospital, you might as well consider your number up because this is it; you aren’t getting out of there as a living human.

2. IN A TRAFFIC JAM

Rule number one with zombies is to stay away from any place where you can be surrounded, boxed in, with literally no avenue for escape. Zombies can easily be outrun (at least under old-school zombie rules), but if they surround you its game over. So, think of a place where you are boxed in, with no escape, and people all around you. Yes, that’s right, the traffic jam. If a zombie outbreak hits your traffic jam, you will be surrounded by a lot of hungry undead commuters. So, you are in your car as a ravenous horde of zombies begins to move around. What do you do? You can sit in your car and hope they walk past, but they won’t and now you are like a sardine in a can for them. You can make a run for it, but you won’t get far, and you can try to drive away but, well, you are in a traffic jam. Don’t worry though, in about five minutes you will be one of the undead.

3. SKYSCRAPER

You may think a skyscraper is the perfect place to be in a zombie apocalypse. Sure, you are high above the ground, you can watch the carnage below and if you have enough food and water you will be able to relax back and wait for the apocalypse to burn itself out. Well, sadly, in the long run you are not safe at all. Eventually you have to leave the apartment building, and that is when trouble begins. First, the elevators probably don’t work so you need to take the stairs and you better hope there aren’t zombies in there. Once you get down the stairs and through the narrow halls, you need to get outside of the building where you will most likely meet a lot of zombies. The other problem with being in a skyscraper is there are other people in there with you who will turn to zombies and if they know you are in your apartment, there really is nowhere for you to go but down.

4. A MALL

If you have seen the original Dawn of the Dead or the remake from 2004, you know that a mall can be a good place to be when there is a zombie apocalypse. While there are plenty of supplies there, there are also a lot of people who are probably thinking the same thing you are. So, instead of having a few people you know hanging out in the mall with you, you will most likely get a lot of people crowded into a mall trying to hold onto the few supplies left. As well, when the apocalypse starts, people will loot and they will loot the mall. In addition, the mall has so many places to secure. Zombies may not stay behind glass. All they have to do is keep pushing against the glass and break through. Then it is all about rushing in and cornering you near the Starbucks.

5. AN AIRPLANE

You are on a direct flight from New York to London, hoping to escape the zombie apocalypse beginning back in the United States. As you lift off, you breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the ocean will now separate you from the undead. Sadly, someone got on the plane after being bit and midway over the Atlantic Ocean, they turn to a zombie. Now what do you do? If you can kill the zombie right away, then you should all be good but the first thing people do in an airplane with a zombie is panic, and panic they will. So, the zombie bites one person, then another, then another and before you know it you have a horde of zombies on the plane. The pilots have locked their doors so the plane will still fly, but what about you? The only place you can go is to the bathroom and you can’t stay in there through the flight. Even if you tried, those zombies are eventually coming through that door and making a mid-flight meal of you. The worst part of being on a plane with zombies is that there is no escape. You can try jumping but unless you know how to fly you aren’t going to survive. You can fight your way through the zombies with your meal tray but there will be too many zombies and too little space for you to use. All you can do is hope that the pilots let you into the cockpit, but what are the chances they are going to open the only thing between them and flesh eating zombies?

6. STADIUM/MOVIE THEATRE

The zombies are attacking but you really want to see a movie or go to see a football game. So, you leave the house and make it safely to where you are joining 50,000 people in a stadium or a few hundred in a movie theater. Now you sit back and try to get your mind off the zombies spreading outside. Sadly, the zombies are not doing the same and they see something like a movie theater or stadium as the place to go for some quick eats. Once the zombies get into the movie theater or stadium, they will begin pushing more and more people into the middle. In a movie theater, you don’t even get to see where you are going as you try and find an emergency exit. In a stadium, you are competing with 50,000 people who are turning into zombies faster than anyone can flee.

All you can really hope for is that the zombies are too busy attacking the people around you so that you can get out. Sadly, both a movie theater and stadium have a limited number of exits, and most of those will be crowded with undead trying to get in. Hope you enjoyed the movie or game, because it is your last.
